Did You Know?
During World War II, Camp Sutton in Monroe served as an Army training site and temporary housing for German POWs. Around Christmas, soldiers stationed at the camp often visited downtown Monroe to experience the small-town holiday charm, including festive parades and shopping at local stores. The camp’s presence significantly influenced Monroe’s growth and cultural history during the 1940s.
